Cute Little Rabbit Sitting in
JasterApr 3, 09:24 AMWhat does the iOS scrollbar look like on pages with a black background?
This cute graphic set comes
xer98Apr 3, 02:38 PMA couple of weeks after the product. Most companies have to do it in the other order. Absolutely elegant (keep Coyote as your voice pure pleasure) you should also push some of your adds towards older folks. The interface is brilliant for older folks who do not understand computers. I am buying an iPad2 for my 75 years old mother.

diamond.gMar 27, 01:09 PMAll Intel machines going forward with the new Sandy Bridge CPU architecture will be EFI boot like Mac has been for some time. That probably explains why Apple will support off-the-shelf PC GPUs now. :apple:
Curious, where is that from?

Billy Boo BobJun 23, 09:38 AMIt's amazing how many people fear that "All you'll be able to do is touch your screen to operate this thing"... "I need a mouse and keyboard"... "My arm will get tired"...
Do any of you whiners understand what a LAYER means? On top of good ol' normal OS X a developer can incorporate parts of an app that can (not necessarily must) be operated by touch. The iOS is NOT going to be the only way to operate it. You can still operate all of your favorite apps with a keyboard and mouse all day long.
"I don't want fingerprints on my screen!".... Well then don't run any apps that are touch enabled. Run any and all of your keyboard/mouse apps you want to all day long.
And... Have you ever been to a bar and seen those coin operated touch screen card game thingies? I worked at a bar for many years and I've seen people play them for hours at a time. It's not as bad as everyone fears.
I would like very much to see a mix of traditional OS X and iOS touch capabilities. I see kids software selling like mad. I've been working on a custom page layout app for a classifieds type of paper. Some touch for Drag-N-Drop operations in parts of it would be a welcome addition.

Digital DudeSep 15, 02:22 PMAntenna gate was blown out of proportion
It really was a non issue.
However I do enjoy my free case :)
Frankly, it was that very item that made this an issue. Had Apple never offered a case, it wouldn't have been 'perceived' as such a fuss. It was the perception of the case that made folks feel as though the iPhone-4 had a problem.
Sidebar: As part of the Apple ecosystem I feel the iPhone-4 is simply wonderful. As a smartphone device, I’d rather have the upcoming Nokia E7/N9? Meego keyboard slider.

LollypopJul 18, 01:49 AMI'm sufficiently excited. Here's hoping for higher quality (than the current TV shows) and Netflix-esque pricing.
Start "TS isn't accurate/only for the US" whining in 3, 2, 1
I was trying to avoid the whining, but now that you bring it up... when is apple going to bring the video content to other coutries?

toddybodyApr 19, 12:06 PMDream config :
Desktop Sandy Bridge CPU (difference being in the PCIe channels available)
Good quality hard drive for mass storage but...
Possibility to instal SSD in the same form factor that the MBA (and giving it its own data channel)
Desktop GPUs
at least 2 Full Thunderbolt ports (again the mobile version of Sandy bridge doesn't offer enough data channel to allow this)
Get a grip dude. That sounds way too reasonable for Apple to do it;)
I agree on all points (with exception of the MBA SS reference...not sure what you mean. Dual HDD bays are plenty sufficient for me. One 64GB SSD, one conventional TB HDD)

evilgEEkSep 9, 09:04 PMCan you put them side by side and run some comparisons?
Since I'm home for the evening and didn't see your post until now, I can't give you any specific side-by-side tests, but I can give you a rough estimate of the speeds.
Overall, the Dual G5 is faster, not by a landslide by any means, but it is faster. Of course the G5 has 1.5 gigs of RAM vs. the mini's 512K, and the G5 has a 1Ghz BUS speed vs. the 667Mhz of the mini. If I were to slap in 2 gigs of RAM in to the mini then I'm sure I would see a little more performance, but I think the G5 would still be faster.
But the mini is still very zippy, no beachballs or waiting on Apps, very fast and clean for average use. Now if I were to do some Photoshop or, say, FCP comparisons, I'm sure the G5 would clean up in those areas.
I'm really happy with the purchase though, it's perfect for what I need it to do.
Oh, I installed Windows XP via BootCamp and after having to burn an illegal copy of my legal disc (the retail disc was bad) I got it running with no problems. I must say, this mini is the fastest Windows machine I've ever had.

iBorg20181Oct 24, 01:35 AMThe current Napa64 platform (that is, Napa with Merom as the CPU) does support 64-bit instructions. It can't address more than 4 GiB of physical memory, but it can run the faster 64-bit instructions.
And that's exactly what I've been waiting for! I don't care about using more than 4GB ram (or 3.2GB as Applied Visual has pointed out), but the 64-bit capability of Merom MBPs will be, I believe, important within the next couple of years that I'll be using this new lappie!

kdarlingApr 27, 07:10 AMOther operating systems, (mobile based included) refer to software as "Programs". This has gone back as far as the days of DOS and Atari/Amiga.
Yes, "program" was popular, but "application" was used as well.
"App" as an abbreviation has been used by application engineers for decades. "Killer App" dates back to the early 1980s.
"Application" is also long used in Windows to describe executables (see below). Both it and its abbreviation were commonly used in articles, for example the Feb 2000 webpage below captured by the Wayback Machine (http://web.archive.org/). It's a waste of effort to try to claim that "app" is somehow new or can be claimed by Apple alone. The only discussion should be about "app store".

charlitunaApr 2, 09:31 PMI'll "believe" when they fix the currently unresolved and widespread quality control issues...light bleed on virtually every unit and blemishes, dents and scratches on units straight out of the box.
Fix those issues, Apple, and then I will "believe" enough to get an iPad 2.
Virtually every unit huh.
Well I have seen tons of postings all over about 'I got the new ipad' with no mention of said problems.
I bought one opening weekend for home use and one last week for work with nada. All nine of the cast on my current gig have problem less iPad 2s, plus the office has gotten close to 100 units all with no issues.
Perhaps by 'virtually every' you mean 'not even one percent of what has been sold' because that is probably the real number

KnightWRXMay 2, 06:04 PMLOL! Yeah... and I remember crashing faster than you click your mouse on those systems. Windows 3.0 and 3.1 were a mess. But of course... most things were back then. how far we've come.
Uh ? You say the crashing is somehow related to pre-emptive multi-tasking and yet you talk about Windows 3.0 and 3.1 which had... cooperative multi-tasking ?
I was talking about Unix systems on 386s (think BSD, think SCO UnixWare, think early Linux). Those had true pre-emptive multi-tasking and they didn't "crash faster than you click your mouse". (heck, my first DOS computer had no mouse and I don't think it ever crashed).
Crashing has nothing to do with the type of multi-tasking.
I think what he is saying is that programs that are actually doing work in the background can continue running, while those that aren't can suspend iOS style. That is how Lion works. It brings the benefits of both iOS & Mac OS.
What's working ? Is a program that's sitting in its idle loop waiting on a listen() operation not working ? Is a program that's firing a heartbeat every X seconds not working ?
Are we that ressource limited that we need to suspend these programs and have system level services to do these tasks, which the programs will register with on launch ? What's the benefit of a system level service vs the program doing it itself ?
Let's face it, it's not like a program sitting in the background is digging into the CPU much with a idle loop...

takaoMar 7, 06:17 PMIt's entirely possible to turn a brand around of course, as VW demonstrated with koda, it's only 15 years ago that koda was still the punchline to almost every joke.
if any car company has shown to have any knowledge about badge engineering/branding it's VW AG
skoda is the obvious recent example of the last 15 years
but compare it to what they did to Audi since 1980 ?
the best way to describe pre 80ties audi ? the famous morris marina quote from Top Gear:
"I'll guarantee that nothing exciting, vibrant, dynamic, new, creative, hopeful or beneficial in any way to humanity has ever been done, thought of or driven to in that drab, dreary, entirely beige, wilfully awful pile of misery."
believe it or not back in the 70ties Opel actually had a trendy, sporty and young reputation/image not unlike Audi has today
in fact i have some old magazines around from the early 70ties and its hilarious to read if you compare the raving reviews Opel got in the past with todays "not as bad as other cars but still cheaper than a VW" reviews
Doesn't say much really does it. ;)
I think you highlight the real issue in the rest of your post. But it doesn't just affect Opel. And that is perhaps GM's biggest problem of all.
it's not exactly GM alone:
yes VW are really bland looking too, but opposed to many GM vehicles if you take the badge away you would be still able recognize that the vehicle is a VW ... with some of the new Opels i'm not so sure (Chevrolet at least got that hideous split grill),
Ford actually isn't any better. their latest fiesta very much looks like a 8 year old peugeot from the front. hardly surprising their sales havent quite lived up to the last models sales afaik
It's not really streamlining when you have something like 6 suv/off-roaders in your range a'la Nissan is it? ;)
true but looking at nissan i would say they are streamlining themselves out of the european market ;)
yes they are selling the GT-R in europe and launching their own luxury brand Infiniti... for what ? to follow the "success story of 20 years Lexus europe"
so they will be selling luxury cars , fake offroaders, a single halo car without any interesting cheaper car to buy ? seriously the new micra is bringing the bland back to the brand .. at least the old micra was a hit with young women
i really like nissan and some of their last decade stuff but i feel they are going back to their 90ties role in europe. and remembering my grandfathers old nissan ... please don't go there
(it could be worse: like mitsubishi dropping the EVO)
Not if the Spark is anything to go by. Fortunately as the i10 proves, being Korean isn't the problem. ;)
at least hyundai finally realised that those names they were putting on their models weren't the brightest idea in 95% of all cases
regarding testing/timing the cars on the Nrburgring: knowing that Audi, BMW and Mercedes have an gentlements agreement not to publish their timed laps i think it's quite a hollow victory for some brands to publish theirs
the argument for that silent agreement ? they don't want "a horsepower arms race"... look how well that has turned out

pumpkinwhiteMar 25, 05:12 PMSo why does iPad 2 output movies in 720p if it can output the game with 1080p native resolution? I thought it could output 1080p only when mirroring it's own screen (which is actually upscaled from '768p').
If apps can output 1080p, I am sure video playback apps will be released which can output 1080p movies in native resolution. Of course, I am not sure if the iPad will be able to play such content. I recently tried to play a 720p movie in the VLC app on the iPad 2 and it couldn't play it. Perhaps the bit rate was too high for it to handle.

AppleScruff1Apr 23, 04:02 PMWho needs an undocumented source when you could watch WWDC 2010 Session 115 'Using Core Location in iOS 4' at 14 minutes and 30 seconds in and hear Morgan Grainger, a man partly responsible for the Core Location framework in the iPhone SDK (read: all location functionality on iPhone) describe how the iPhone caches nearby cell tower information to help the device find its location in the circumstances above.
Given that we have the engineer partly behind this framework explain that the iPhone caches this information, we know that the iPhone has to be storing this information somewhere. This 'consolidated.db' matches the words in the video perfectly, making it no great assumption that this is the file which fulfils this purpose.
Granted you don't sound like a developer and so won't have access to these videos, but any other developer could do the same and corroborate this.
It being a bug is simply a rumour which has no links to an official source. I'm far more inclined to believe the words of a guy who wrote the code that collects this information in the first place
It's all somewhat speculation until we hear Apples response.
NaimfanMar 22, 12:14 PMYeah, but homosexuality is a choice.
Wrong.
aswitcherJan 11, 08:42 PMOk, its looking good to me. I might have buyers remorse when the pro touch version appears but thats likely to be quite expensive and a Rev A with some expensive very new bits that I can probably do without.
